UMD faculty and staff members who currently use the DIT-supported Exchange system for email and calendar will be moving to the new UMD Google Apps for Education system for email and calendar beginning in February 2016. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers. Additional FAQs will be added as the project progresses.
What is Google Apps?
Google Apps is a suite of Web-based email, calendar and collaboration applications that Google hosts on their own servers. Google provides these applications as a “service,” rather than as software to download and install. To access these applications, you simply use a Web browser on a computer that is connected to the Internet.
Why are we migrating?
The Division of IT is committed to delivering next-generation systems and best practices campus-wide in an effort to make our operations more nimble and more efficient. As it currently stands, there are 13 email systems on campus. Over the next year, we will consolidate those systems, many of which operate on Microsoft Exchange and Outlook, to one centrally managed via the Google Apps for Education platform. This migration to a centralized approach will be led and managed by the DIT and will empower all users to optimize their communication.
